How to Celebrate Earth Day 2024
Tons of plastic ends up in the ocean every year. By 2050, some researchers estimate there will be more plastic than fish (by weight) in the ocean. Earth Day 2024, which is April 22, aims to create more awareness about this increasing issue – its theme is "Planet vs. Plastic”.
Earthday.org, which is the primary coordinator of Earth Day events worldwide, is calling for a 60% reduction in plastics by 2040, while also bringing more attention to the health risks of plastic – to both humans and mammals.

A Brief History of Earth Day
Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson helped lead the effort that resulted in the first Earth Day in 1970. A staunch conservationist, Nelson had long sought to bring environmental issues into the political arena. Through creative promotion, the first Earth Day was a resounding success – reportedly spurring about 20 million Americans to participate in rallies for environmental reform.
Later that year, thanks to growing sentiment about protecting the environment and rallies across the country, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was created by the United States government.
