National Native American Heritage Month

November is National Native American Heritage Month, which recognizes the history, ancestry, and traditions of Native Americans. During the month, we honor and celebrate the impact that Native Americans and their tribes have on our communities and society.

If you are in Washington, you can learn more about the Native American tribes in the area by visiting Washington Tribes website. For those outside of the Pacific Northwest, Native Land is a great resource learning where other Indigenous communities are and they languages they speak.

Native Americans proudly share their culture with their communities through music, dance, and art. People and organizations across the country observe National Native American Heritage Month by participating in activities that highlight Native American heritage and customs.

Ways that you can observe National Native American Heritage Month include:

  • Learn more about Native Americans including their history, their impact, and issues that are important to them today
  • Visit a museum that features exhibits devoted to Native American history and heritage
  • Watch a documentary that spotlights Native American culture
  • Plant flowers and plants that are indigenous to your area to honor both Native Americans and the earth

National Native American Heritage Month was officially recognized in 1990 when President George H.W. Bush approved a resolution that designated November as what was then called National American Indian Heritage Month. Prior to that, several states had set aside certain days to honor Native Americans, some dating back to 1916.

We invite you to join us in observing National Native American Heritage Month this year.
