Charis Counseling
Small Business Saturday Profile
Small Business Saturday is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. First observed in 2010, it encourages consumers to patronize small and local businesses. Small Business Saturday occurs on the final Saturday of November, meaning this year it’s November 30.
To recognize the impact of small businesses on our communities, we are spotlighting local businesses over the next few weeks. Today, we are featuring Charis Counseling, a nonprofit group of mental health providers that provides professional therapy services and mental health education in Clark County.
Executive director Jamie Califf recently shared her thoughts about Charis Counseling and how TwinStar Credit Union has helped their business.

1. What was the inspiration behind Charis Counseling?
Jamie: Charis was started in 1997 by Dr Kay Bruce, who saw a need for mental health services to reach into the more rural and conservative pockets of Clark County, to reduce stigma against mental health, and increase trust and access to licensed, professional mental health services. I joined Charis in 2012 as counseling staff and have currently been the executive director of Charis since 2020.
My heart for Charis is to ensure that no one who starts counseling with us will have to stop because of finances, which is a reality for 30% of Americans in counseling today. I am inspired by our clients who are brave enough to commit to their own healing, even amongst incredibly challenging life circumstances.
2. What’s been the most rewarding part about being a business owner?
Jamie: The most rewarding part has been witnessing the profound transformations in our clients’ lives. Seeing individuals overcome personal challenges and grow emotionally, spiritually, and mentally — thanks to our dedicated team and mission-driven approach, is incredibly fulfilling. It’s a constant reminder of why we do what we do: to help people heal and thrive.
3. How has TwinStar helped you and Charis be successful?
Jamie: TwinStar has provided invaluable support through their financial services, which has enabled us to manage resources efficiently and focus more on our clients’ needs. Their assistance with financial planning and support has helped us sustain and expand our services, ensuring that we can continue offering affordable, quality counseling to those who need it most.
4. What do you think makes Charis stand out?
Jamie: Charis Counseling stands out due to our unique integration of financial assistance with a holistic approach to mental and emotional well-being. Our commitment to understanding and addressing each client’s values and needs, combined with our compassionate and personalized care, sets us apart in the field of counseling.
5. What’s one challenge that Charis has overcome that you are proud of?
Jamie: One challenge we overcame was expanding our services to reach more clients while managing limited resources. Through strategic planning and community support, we successfully increased our outreach and impact to three locations, and another on the way in 2025, allowing us to provide counseling and financial assistance to more individuals in need.
6. What’s one thing you wish everyone knew about small businesses?
Jamie: I wish everyone knew that small businesses, especially non-profits like Charis, often operate on tight budgets while striving to make a significant impact. The dedication and hard work of our team are driven by a deep commitment to our mission, and every bit of donor support, no matter how small, makes a huge difference in achieving our goals.
7. What’s your favorite memory associated with Charis so far?
Jamie: One of my favorite memories is seeing a client who had struggled for years finally achieve a breakthrough in their journey. The joy and relief on their face, knowing they had found hope and healing through our services, was incredibly moving and reaffirmed the importance of our mission.
