Women's Equality Day 2023

August 26 marks Women’s Equality Day, which commemorates the 19th Amendment that grants women the right to vote.

“The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex. Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.”

U.S. Secretary of State Bainbridge Colby certified the amendment Aug. 26, 1920. Despite this, not all women were able to vote right away.

Marginalized groups still faced obstacles such as literacy tests and poll taxes that made it difficult for them to exercise their right to vote. It wasn’t until 45 years later that the Voting Rights Act of 1965 removed those barriers.

Representative Bella Abzug first championed a bill in 1971 to designate August 26 as Women’s Equality Day. It wasn’t until two years later in 1973 that congress officially passed the resolution.

In addition to celebrating the passage of the 19th Amendment, Women’s Equality Day highlights the continuing work being done toward complete equality.

At TwinStar, we strive to support our employees every way possible. We have a Women in Business employee resource group (ERG), and our DEI & Development team offers leadership development training that women are encouraged to take advantage of. Additionally, several employees sit on boards that help support women in our local communities.

We are proud to observe Women’s Equality Day — and our entire organization is committed to equity for all of our employees and members.
