Women's History Month
March is Women’s History Month, which celebrates the impact and legacy that women have on our society and culture. It’s celebrated globally and corresponds with International Women’s Day on March 8, the latter of which focuses on the importance of women’s struggles for equality.
The theme for Women’s History Month 2024 is “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion,” which aims to recognize women who are committed to eliminating bias and discrimination to help ensure a positive future.
Ways you can celebrate Women’s History Month this year include:
- Watch a documentary about women’s rights
- Read a book about women’s struggles for equality
- Listen to women-hosted podcasts
- Attend a TED talk by a woman
- Support women-owned businesses
Women’s History Month in the United States originated as one-day event in 1978 in Sonoma County, California. Historian Gerda Lerner, and the National Women’s History Alliance, later advocated for Women's History Day to be recognized as a national week. President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the week of March 8, 1980 as the first National Women’s Week.
Congress passed Public Law 100-9 in 1987, which officially designated March as Women's History Month. Since then, schools and communities have used Women’s History Month to promote equality between sexes in the classroom, using programs that highlight women’s roles in history and society.
At TwinStar, we have several employee resource groups (ERGs) that work together to foster community, support, development, and provide education about various identities amongst our organization. One of them is a Women in Business ERG.
Additionally, numerous female employees serve on boards of local nonprofits and organizations, some of which are dedicated to supporting women in a variety of ways.
We are proud to recognize Women’s History Month and the impact that women have had and continue to make on our lives. Please join us at TwinStar in celebrating National Women’s Month.
